Welcome to the Blog: Practical College Support for High School Counselors
Why This Blog?
I’ll be honest—starting a blog wasn’t on my to-do list. Like many of you, I’m a full-time high school counselor helping students with college admissions and constantly learning as the field evolves. I definitely don’t have all the answers, but I’ve been lucky enough to work in a supportive environment and learn from some of the best in this profession.
Not every counselor has that same level of support—especially those juggling college guidance on top of everything else. I started this blog to share ideas, tools, and strategies that can make this work just a little easier. I hope that you can take something from my experience and things I have picked up along the way.
Who Am I?
I grew up in a small farm town in Indiana where college counseling wasn’t really a thing. When I went from a Spanish teacher to a college counselor, I had to learn everything from scratch—figuring out financial aid, application processes, and how to best guide students through their postsecondary options. Before jumping into college counseling in 2020, I spent 15 years as a Spanish instructor at the middle school, high school, and university levels (FSU). It was a huge transition but I love being a counselor and learning as much as I can.
Five years may not seem like much, but in that time, I’ve fully immersed myself—attending conferences, hosting events, visiting campuses, and learning from incredible colleagues. It’s been an intense but rewarding journey as a one-person office, and I know how overwhelming this work can be. My goal is to share practical advice that you can use right away.
What You’ll Find Here
Every two weeks, I’ll post about something specific in college counseling— something I learned or that I found interesting, application strategies, best practices, and ways to simplify the process for you and your students. These posts aren’t meant to be one-size-fits-all. Every school is different, so take what’s helpful and adapt it to fit your needs.
Let’s Learn Together
I hope this blog becomes a helpful resource, whether you’re a seasoned counselor or just starting out. If you have questions, ideas, or topics you’d like me to hear about, reach out— I am always looking for an excuse to do a deep-dive on a topic.
